Ponce Yacht & Fishing Club sails on with special activities

The Ponce Yacht & Fishing Club (PYFC) has come a long way from its beginnings in 1938 on a small island off the shore of Ponce that could be only accessed by boat. Today, the club not only has land access, but also a host of services and amenities that make it a hallmark of the "Ciudad Señorial."

However, this growth is fueled by the love and passion for boating of its members past and present, and surely will be inherited and carried on by future members.

An example of this commitment is the Match Race Clinic, to be held at the club with champion sailor Peter Holmberg from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). In a match race, two sailboats compete over a predetermined course, as opposed to regattas, where fleets of boats compete. While in fleet races, competitors speed around the course looking to clock the best time, in match races, it's all about crossing the line first, using all types of tactics.

The two-day clinic will take place at PYFC in Ponce July 30-31. Holmberg will discuss the basic concepts of match racing, followed by an IC-24 Round Robin series on the last training day. The cost of the two-day event is $100 per person. For details, contact Alicia at alice@aeronetpr.com or 787-842-9003.

Holmberg, a native of the USVI, will set attendees on a new course into the heart of sailing, with more than 40 years' experience as a master and professional helmsman, tactician and strategist who has made his mark in the Americas Circuit. More importantly, he also is a sought-after consultant in the organization of sailing-related events, and has made sailing his true life and passion in the region he loves most, the Caribbean.

In addition, get ready for Discover the Caribbean, a sailing festival that will take place in November at PYFC.

"We're celebrating PYFC's rich sailing history as well as having a regatta, and we want everyone to join us in the celebration," said Joel Santiago, sailing director at PYFC.

In addition to the regatta, Discover the Caribbean will include a festival with live music, a fashion show and activities for children and the entire family. Visit the PYFC website at www.discoverpyfc.com for more information.
