García Padilla against same-sex marriage
In an appearance at a seniors center Trujillo Alto, the PDP senator said in his judgment marriage is between a man and a woman. On the other hand, he added that a person’s sexual preference cannot be an excuse for discrimination.
His opposition to same-ex marriage is line with the position of his chief rival for La Fortaleza, New Progressive Party Gov. Luis Fortuño.
He said his stance on same-sex marriage is tied in with the quality of life in Puerto Rico.
“If we want to improve the quality of life in Puerto Rico and institute real policies to deal with the family unit we have to be in favor of this basic principle of Christianity that marriage is only between a man and a woman,” the candidate said.
The PDP candidate said married couples should be ensured jobs, adequate medical services and sound educations for their children.
García Padilla is a prominent local Democrat who has aligned himself closely with President Barack Obama, who came out in support of marriage between same-sex couples.
