New $31M Walmart opens in Toa Baja
The $31 million store at the western edge of the San Juan metropolitan area is credited with creating 500 jobs.
The Toa Baja location brings the Arkansas-based retail giant’s roster of Puerto Rico Walmart stores to 17 since the first was opened in Fajardo in 1992. A new two-level store is under construction in the heart of the Santurce sector of San Juan.
The chain operates six regular Walmarts, 11 Supercenters, 11 Sam’s Club warehouse, 25 Amigo supermarkets and three Súper Ahorros grocery stores around the island. A new two-level
“This opening reaffirms our commitment to the island’s economic development through the creation of new jobs and buying from local agricultural products and manufactured goods,” said Walmart Puerto Rico general manager Jaime Fernández.
The new Toa Baja Supercenter includes 700 parking spaces, a Banco Popular Branch, a Panda Express eatery and a range of specialty departments including a deli, butcher shop, pharmacy, bakery, optician, jewelry, gardening, beauty parlor and financial services.
A series of “green” technologies were built into the outlet to reduce its electric and water usage.
