Miranda Torres wins second mock vote in Caguas

By CB Online Staff

Caguas mayoral hopeful William Miranda Torres won a second mock election staged Friday as part of the run up to next month’s Popular Democratic Party primary election for the city hall helm.

During the drill at Las Catalinas Mall on Friday, Miranda Torres got 370 votes. Harry Vega was second with 70 votes while PDP Rep. José Varela got 41.

“It fills me with great joy to share ideas with all the residents who have been visiting,” Miranda Torres said. “I am very happy to see the enthusiasm. It energizes me to see people with hope and a willingness to work together,” Miranda Torres said.

Miranda Torres, who is campaigning to replace his father William Miranda Marín, who died in the middle of his fourth term as Caguas mayor last month, gave his most clear indication yet that he would seek to hold the post beyond the two years left in his late father’s term.

“After having made the decision to continue the work of this great leader, William Miranda Marín, and complete the two remaining years, I decided that it is not just to work for two years. It is important for Caguas residents and my city to continue working beyond 2012,” Miranda Torres said.

The businessman said his focus is to provide continuity to projects already underway and ensure that pending projects are started and finished, including the downtown revamp and the Gautier Benítez School.

This was the second mock vote staged by WKAQ Univisión Radio, and the second won by Miranda Torres.

In the first drill Wednesday at Plaza Centro shopping center in Caguas, Miranda Torres got 481 votes. Varela got 334 votes while Harry Vega received 19.

Following Miranda Marín’s death from pancreatic cancer, Miranda Torres quickly emerged as the favorite to finish his father’s term. However, he was beaten for the post by Varela in a PDP Caguas committee election. That vote was contested and the PDP opted for a primary to settle the issue.
