Minority Business Center wins award

By CB Online Staff

The Puerto Rico Minority Business Center (MBC) has been recognized by the U.S. Commerce Department’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) for generating the most loans, contracts and jobs in the agency’s New York region.

The MBC, which operates on the island through the Puerto Rico Products Association, received the award as part of the MBDA’s national conference in Houston.

“The importance of this award for local entrepreneurs is that this center, which is one of 27 in the entire nation, achieved the highest score by region with the highest dollar amount in terms of loans approved and contracts landed with federal agencies,” MBC Director Teresa Berríos said.

The MBC also earned nods for assisting the highest number of clients in generating more jobs, recording higher sales, forming strategic alliances and delivering top-quality service.

Through the assistance it provided from 2007 to 2011, the MBC reached nearly $79 million in loans and $147 million in contracts signed.

The MBC’s mission is to create and retain jobs that will strengthen the economic growth of minority businesses on the island.
