A National Guard soldier from Iowa has drowned at a beach along Puerto Rico's north coast.
Police say 49-year-old Cory Mildenstein, of Sioux City, was swimming at Surfer Beach in Aguadilla late Wednesday when a co-worker noticed Mildenstein was being dragged by the current.
U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad says a rescue swimmer gave Mildenstein CPR. Castrodad says Mildenstein was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
The beach is known for its heavy currents. The National Weather Service had issued a high surf advisory.
Officials with Iowa's National Guard office said he was a member of their Air National Guard. They declined to comment further.
