Tech to empower taxi riders in tourist zones

By : ALEX DÍAZ

Tourist-zone taxis in Puerto Rico will soon be equipped with an electronic console passengers may use to find attractions, hotels, restaurants and other locations, as well as surf the Internet, follow the movement of the taxi on the integrated GPS, and process card payments.

The Puerto Rico Tourism Co. also revealed that the touch-screen system will photograph passengers upon entering a taxi, for security’s sake, and will alert police authorities in case of an accident or a criminal act.

The console, coming to Puerto Rico this October, is deployed in such popular tourist destinations as New York, Las Vegas, Washington, D.C. and London.

“Our taxi drivers,” said Tourism Co. Executive Director Luis Rivera Marín, “are oftentimes the ones who establish that first impression of Puerto Rico in the minds of our visitors, which is why we’re working hand-in-hand with them to modernize and enable each of these taxis with first-class resources.”

Rivera will be holding a press conference Tuesday morning announcing the latest hotel occupancy figures for the island.
